Why simultaneous streams fall out of sync (and what you can do about it)

When two broadcasts of the same event seem to be at different moments, it’s almost always platform delay — not a problem with your internet.

It's common to notice, when watching two broadcasts of the same event at the same time — the official channel and a co-stream, for example, or two creators covering the same match — that one reacts to something that hasn't happened yet on the other. That's almost never a problem with your connection: it's the delay (the gap between the actual moment of the event and the moment it reaches you) being different between the two sources.

Where the delay comes from

  • Video encoding and distribution. Each platform processes and distributes video in stages — capture, encoding, upload to servers, distribution to you — and each stage adds a few seconds. That process isn't identical across Twitch, YouTube and Kick.
  • Latency setting chosen by the channel. Some platforms (YouTube is the clearest example) let broadcasters choose between latency profiles — lower usually costs stability on worse connections, higher prioritizes a bigger buffer and a more stable stream.
  • Intentional delay. In some competitive contexts, a player's POV is deliberately delayed relative to the official broadcast for competitive integrity reasons — it's not a technical failure, it's a choice made by the event's organizers.
  • Human reaction delay. When one broadcast is a reaction to another (co-stream, reaction video), there's an additional delay that's simply the time it takes the person to process and react to what they're seeing — that can't be eliminated, it's inherent to the format.

What you can actually do about it

In practice, not much — the delay is set on the broadcaster's side, not the viewer's, so there's no button that perfectly syncs two independent broadcasts. What usually helps is:

  • Accepting which source is "ahead" and treating the other as slightly delayed, instead of trying to force perfect sync.
  • Using the faster source as your main audio reference, since it's the one that will "tell" you what's happening first.
  • Avoiding spoilers between chats when the delay is large — it's common for one broadcast's chat to comment on something that hasn't happened yet on the other, which ruins the surprise for anyone following both.
If the two broadcasts you're comparing are of the same event but on different platforms (one on Twitch, another on YouTube, for example), the delay between them tends to be more noticeable than between two broadcasts on the same platform, because each one goes through its source platform's own distribution pipeline.

When it actually matters

For most use cases — watching a streamer and a co-stream, following several POVs of a match — a few seconds' difference doesn't hurt the experience. It matters more in contexts where the exact order of events is critical, like betting in real time or trying to predict a play before it shows up on another screen.
